The Morning Routine That Changed Everything for Me as a Woman in Leadership
June 29, 2026 | by Carmela Levy
There was a time when my mornings looked like this: alarm at 6am, scroll through emails for 20 minutes while still half asleep, rush to get ready, skip breakfast, and bolt out the door already stressed before the day had even started. Sound familiar?
I was a high-achieving woman who had somehow forgotten to take care of the most important asset in her business: herself. It wasn’t until I overhauled my mornings that everything — my health, my focus, my leadership — began to shift.
The 5-Part Morning Framework I Now Swear By
1. Hydrate Before You Caffeinate
Before the coffee — and I love my coffee — I drink 16 oz of water with a squeeze of lemon and a pinch of sea salt. This rehydrates you after 7-8 hours of no fluid intake, kickstarts your metabolism, and supports your adrenal function. This one habit alone changed my energy levels within two weeks.
2. Move Your Body — Even for 10 Minutes
It doesn’t have to be a full workout. A 10-minute walk, yoga flow, or light stretch routine elevates cortisol in a healthy way (yes, there is a healthy way!), boosts your mood via endorphins, and primes your brain for focused thinking. Leaders who move in the morning show up sharper, calmer, and more decisive.
3. Set Your Intention — Not Your Schedule
There’s a difference between reviewing your calendar and setting an intention. Before I open a single app or email, I write three things: one word for how I want to feel today, one thing I’m grateful for, and one affirmation. This is where my affirmation journal comes in. It sounds simple, but it’s a practice in neurological reconfiguration — you’re quite literally rewiring how your brain starts the day.
4. Eat a Real Breakfast
Skipping breakfast might seem like a time-saver, but for women especially, it dysregulates blood sugar and spikes cortisol further. A protein and healthy-fat-rich breakfast — think eggs with avocado, a smoothie with protein powder and greens, or Greek yogurt with seeds — sustains your energy, reduces cravings, and keeps your hormones balanced all morning.
5. Protect the First Hour
No email. No social media. No news. For the first hour after waking, your brain is in a highly suggestible, creative state. Guard it fiercely. Use it for your own growth, clarity, and preparation — not reacting to everyone else’s agenda. This boundary alone transformed my leadership presence and decision-making ability.
You don’t have to overhaul your entire life overnight. Start with one of these practices tomorrow morning. Then add another next week. The compound effect of small, consistent choices is what separates women who feel like they’re barely surviving from those who are truly thriving — in health, in mindset, and in leadership.
